There are around 170 species of Banksia's from the Proteaceae plant family.

One of my favourite phases of the banksia flowers lifespan is the woody structure of the flower which are follicles that release the seeds.  In some species the seeds mature quickly, however in most species the follicles open only after being stimulated by a bushfire.
